When van Gogh decided to become an artist, no one, not even Vincent himself, suspected that he possessed extraordinary artistic gifts. He evolved remarkably rapidly from an inept but impassioned novice into a genuine, original master. He proved to have an exceptional flair for bold, harmonious colour effects, and an infallible knack for choosing simple but memorable compositions. The van Gogh Museum houses the world's largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh, comprising 200 paintings, some 500 drawings, four sketchbooks and around 800 letters. The core of the collection originally came from the artist's family and is now the property of the Vincent van Gogh Foundation. Since it opened in 1973, the van Gogh Museum has enjoyed ever increasing popularity. Now, every year, some 1.5 million people come to Amsterdam from all over the world to admire the work of van Gogh.
