Love Is Love

Love is eternal and love is essential. But sometimes it’s not so easy. Especially when society at large believes you love the “wrong” person.

Men who love men, women who love women, and people whose gender expression doesn’t fit neatly into the male/female paradigm have been fighting for equal rights and protection under the law – not to mention the freedom to love one another openly and without fear – for a long time.

Many mark the beginning of the Gay Rights Movement as June 28th, 1969. That night the New York Police raided a bar frequented by gay and transgender patrons called the Stonewall Inn. For many, the bar was a sanctuary in a world hostile to homosexuality. Police raided it because the bar was operating without a liquor license. The reason they didn’t have a liquor license? The N.Y. State Liquor Authority refused to license establishments serving gay patrons.

The raid sparked a six-day resistance, which came to be known as the Stonewall Riots.

Five months after the riots, a group of gay rights activists in New York decided to plan a march to celebrate gay pride and mark the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.

The first gay pride parade was held on June 28th, 1970. People marched through 51 blocks of Manhattan – a bold and very visible statement – declaring love for each other, commitment to their community, and pride in their identity.

Since then, June has been designated Gay Pride Month. Numerous cities have begun hosting their own pride parades too, celebrating and honoring the history, people, and efforts that define the LGBTQ community in all of its strength, resilience, persistence, and pride.

Show your pride at your local parade this year by packing essentials in our Rainbow Heart Tote from our All You Need Is Love collection.
